Sketches of a Jay
Date: 1965
Size: 8in x 16in

The sketches were made when I was about 16. They were based on a dead bird that I found, which I wired into a lifelike pose.

Male and Female Pheasants in the snow
Date: 1978
Male and female pheasants in the snow was painted when Tell and Eileen lived and worked on a farm in Kent. One of the farm hands used to shoot game and brought back a couple of pheasants, which Tell used to compose this painting.

Christmas Tawny Owl
Date: 1980
Size: 12in x 16in
Material: Watercolor on paper
At the time, I was living in a caravan while working on a farm in Norfolk. A worker called in with a Tawny Owl that he found dead on a road. Because Eileen and our children were visiting her parents for Christmas, I was able to establish a setup within the caravan that allowed me to sketch and paint the owl over a few days.

Pheasant Sculpture
Date: 1980
Size: 20in x 14in
Material: Watercolor on paper
This image is a painting of pheasants based on clay models that I created in my studio. I developed an unusual technique for the painting, working with only one color but with different strengths of pigment. The lightest pigment was applied first to the whole painting and allowed to dry. The next lightest pigment was then applied in the same way, followed progressively by darker and darker layers of pigment until the background was completed. I used this technique also for the Tawny Owl painting. I don’t know of anyone else who has worked this way; I really enjoyed the process and seeing the result.

A Toucan Intrudes
Date: 1983
Size: 20in x 28in
Material: Egg temerpa on a gessoed panel
A surrealistic depiction of a Red-Billed Toucan; the sequence of images is depicted on a single panel.

12
Owl Attack
Date: 1983
Size: 16in x 30in
Material: Egg tempera on gessoed canvas
The model for this painting was a dead Tawny Owl; different images of the owl are depicted from three angles. Because the head was badly damaged, I created a clay model of the head, inserting bronze-colored beads from a necklace to help depict the eyes, giving the owls a demon-like appearance. The initial painting of the mouse was removed and repainted; the first depiction, with the mouse cowering down, came across as too sad.

Long-eared Owl
Date: 1987
Size: 16in x 12in
Material: Egg tempera on gessoed panel
On a frosty morning in Norfolk (February 1987), I was out hawking with Rowan and the goshawk. Rowan put up a duck out of a frozen pond, which the goshawk immediately went after. But in front of the pond was a reed bed out of which popped up a Long-eared Owl. The goshawk changed direction and grabbed the owl, but both fell down on the ice. I had to wade through the water, breaking ice, to reach the birds. Neither appeared damaged apart from a few crumpled feathers. I put the owl into my falconry bag and took it home to check that it hadn’t been damaged. I phoned a friend, an RSPCA inspector, who advised me to keep the bird for a few days to make sure it wasn’t injured. I temporarily placed the bird in a shed with blacked-out windows. Over the next few days, I sketched the owl, using this as the basis for the painting. I then released the bird back where I had found it.

Common Loons or Divers
Date: 2009
Size: 12in x 18in
Material: Oil on canvas
The eerie call of the Common Loon or Great Northern Diver (Gavia immer), is said to capture the spirit of the northern wilderness. During the breeding season, loons live on lakes in Canada, the northern United States and the southern areas of Greenland and Iceland.

23
Condor Canyon
Date: 2009
Size: 31.5in x 55in
Material: Oil on canvas
Vultures are another species that have been a passion of mine; at the age of 19, I travelled to India to study them. California Condors (Gymnogyps californianus) are the largest flying birds in the USA. Through the efforts of conservationists, they were brought back from the brink of extinction and can now be seen, once more, flying over Grand Canyon.

24
Wood Ducks
Date: 2010
Size: 28in x 52in
Material: Oil on canvas
The individual ducks were first photographed at the Slimbridge Wetland Centre in the UK. I then traveled around Cooks County in Illinois looking for a suitable background as the setting for the painting. The log, found floating in the water, provided the ideal perch for painting the ducks in different poses.

Size: 36in x 60in

26
The Point of No Return: The Dodo
Date: 2013
Size: 24in x 36in
Material: Oil on canvas
This iconic flightless bird (Raphus cucullatus) has been extinct since 1662. It was endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. My painting is the result of a fresh look at the historic accounts and physical remains.

27
Cassowary
Date: 2014
Size: 30in x 60in
Material: Oil on canvas
Cassowaries have always been a passion of mine, ever since I kept one back in my zoo days. The image depicts an Australian Cassowary, also known as the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius). The painting shows a male bird from the northeast of Australia caring for his brood of chicks.

28
Common Eider Ducks
Date: 2015
Size: 20in x 24in
Material: Oil on canvas
Eider Ducks (Somateria mollissima) are one of my favourite species. They are found all around the Arctic Circle in countries such as Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Siberia, and Canada; they are also found further south in European countries such as Denmark, England and Scotland. They are coastal ducks that dive to search for food on the seabed and feed chiefly on blue mussels and other shellfish. To capture the details for the foreground of the painting, I created a mock-up model of a beach in the studio, complete with pebbles, sand and mussel shells.

29
Canvasback Duck
Date: 2017
Size: 16in x 24in
Material: Oil on canvas
The Canvasback Duck (Aythya valisineria) is the largest diving duck in North America and is often referred to as the "aristocrat of ducks". In addition to their diving, they are known for their flight speed and the large, close gatherings they form, like rafts on the water during winter.

Green Aracaris
Date: 2023
Size: 12in x 16in
Material: Oil on canvas
I used to work in zoos many years ago, and I actually kept several species of toucans and toucanets. These colorful birds have always fascinated me.
