CJP Ionides
Date: 1982
Size: 24in x 36in
Material: Oil on canvas
For this painting, I got in touch with Margaret Lane, who wrote the book Snake Man: Life of CJP Ionides. She had spent several weeks staying with Ionides while writing the book. My father was of a similar build to Ionides and he posed for me. I put a clay model that I had made of a Gaboon Viper on his lap. Actually, it was the wrong species of snake, but I never got around to changing it. While I was getting ready to paint, my father lit up a smoke, hanging his hand like a cobra rising up about to strike. I thought his pose looked so good that I made him stay like that for hours. For the painting, I had to change his face to look more like Ionides, and I dressed him in similar clothes to those worn by Ionides.

Margaret's husband was a roofer and he installed a skylight in my studio to let in natural light. Instead of payment, he asked me to paint a picture of his wife Margaret, as a present. Her favourite pet was her Mexican Red Knee tarantula.

Three Sisters Portrait
Date: 1992
Size: 30in x 20in
Material: Oil on canvas
Description: This is a commissioned painting of three young sisters. For portraits with children as the subject, I like to know what their hobbies are. For example, if a young boy likes planes, I might ask him to pose with one of his toy planes; if later in life he becomes a pilot, the painting would make a great connection to his earlier interests.
The three sisters had so many interests, it was hard to capture them in the portrait.

Date: 2007
Size: 16in x 12in
Material: Oil on canvas
The portrait was commissioned for Bob Ashley and based on photographs he gave me. Sadly, his dad died before the painting was commissioned. Bob’s dad used to come along to NARBC shows and helped out in various ways, such as collecting money and handing out wristbands. A copy of the painting is displayed in a bar he frequented in his hometown of Palm Springs so his friends could remember him. I added the palm trees in the background in recognition of his home setting.

CJP Ionides

In this portrait, I have captured a good friend of mine in a typically relaxed pose. Ty is a well-respected contributor to the herpetological community in the USA. He is also known for his generous charitable contributions to reptile and amphibian conservation.

Clark Family Portrait
Date: 2006
Size: 24ins x 20in
Material: Oil on canvas
This was a commissioned portrait. I went to school with Julian Clark who sometimes came with me to Burnham Common when I was looking for snakes. He often said, jokingly, that he would hold my coat when I found a snake.

H. Bernard Ashley

Geronimo
Date: 2015
Size: 48in x 36in
Material: Oil on canvas
For this portrait, I researched various photographs of Geronimo, obtaining a sense of his appearance, dress, footwear, and the rifles he used. The rock formation is typical of the terrain found in the Dragoon Mountains, Cochise County, Arizona. This is an area Geronimo is known to have hidden when being chased by the America Army. The painting is on view at the Geronimo Art Center, Cochise County Museum, New Mexico.
