Evolution
Date: 1975
Size: 17in x 24in

For this painting I wanted to illustrate the notion of evolution by creating an imaginative and surreal depiction of change over time.

Sika Deer

For this surrealistic depiction of a Sika Deer, I based the context for the painting on initial sketches I made in Burnham Beeches, UK.

English Longhorn Cattle
Date: 1984
Size: 30in x 48in
Material: Oil on canvas
I love English Longhorn Cattle, but sadly, they are now considered to be a rare breed. For the background, I chose Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland, a desolate but beautiful place on the North Sea coast of England.

Tiger
Date: 1986
Size: 8in x 10in
Material: Egg tempera on gessoed panel
This painting was done for the bedroom of my son, Leon, when he was a baby. Leon still displays the painting over 40 years later. It depicts a surreal image of a tiger in the wild.

07
European Brown Hare
Date: 1987
Size: 16in x 24in
Material: Oil on canvas
For this painting, I ordered a hare from my local butcher’s shop with the instruction that I wanted it with fur on, not to be skinned. I set it up in my studio using wires to create a still-life image.

Pet Monkey
Date: 1993
Size: 20in x 30in
Material: Oil on canvas
This painting was based on sketches I made of a young monkey in a zoo. I created a model of the monkey; my wife, Eileen, made a little suit for the monkey to wear. I added the broken chain and painted the setting to enhance the overall image, as well as depict the curiosity that monkeys are known for. The painting was not a commissioned piece, just something based on an idea I had.

Wildcat
Date: 2001
Size: 24in x 30in
Material: Oil on canvas
Several years ago I had the privilege of sharing the life of a Wildcat from the Scottish Highlands. It was a truly remarkable experience and one of the most rewarding relationships that I’ve experienced with any wild creature. Recent studies have shown that most of the wildcats in Scotland have some hybrid ancestry and that only about 100 pure Scottish Wildcats (Felis silvestris) remain in the most remote areas of their range.

Shih Tzu Portrait
Date: 2004
Size: 16in x 20 in
Material: Oil on canvas
This is a commissioned portrait of two Shih Tzus. I quite often did paintings of dogs and other pet animals; this is quite a normal thing for a professional artist starting out to do as a commission piece. The dogs in this image were quite cute to work with.

Mexican Wolves
Date: 2012
Size: 32in x 60in
Material: Oil on canvas
The Mexican Wolf is the smallest, rarest, and most genetically distinct subspecies of the North American Grey Wolf. Conservationists have fought to return them to their former range since they were eliminated, in the wild, in the 1950s.

Tasmanian Wolf
Date: 2013
Size: 60in x 48in
Material: Oil on canvas
Ever since the last captive specimen died, in 1935, in Hobart Zoo, there have been reports of sightings of this elusive marsupial in the remote areas of Tasmania. Extinct? Let’s hope not.

Bison
Date: 2014
Size: 36in x 60in
Material: Oil on canvas
The inspiration for this painting has two main sources. Historically, until recently, a herd of bison roamed up from Mexico to graze in New Mexico. I had traveled in the area several times but had not come across any bison. I decided to do a painting of the herd using the valley in which they previously roamed as the backdrop. The composition, however, was also inspired by a group of Javelina (they are part of the peccary family and resemble small wild pigs) that I came across when cycling in Arizona. The group crossed the road while the large male stood in front of me, protecting the others until the last of them had crossed the road; the male then followed the others. The action and stance of the male javelina provided the imagery for the male bison in the foreground of the painting.

Pronghorn
Date: 2016
Size: 20in x 30in
Material: Oil on canvas
The Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is often referred to as the Pronghorn Antelope, because it closely resembles the true antelopes; its closest relatives, however, are giraffes and okapi. The Pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. They are depicted here, in the area of the Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona.

This beautiful, cat-like, member of the raccoon family is native to the deserts and arid regions of North America.
Also known as the ‘Miner’s Cat’, it is easily tamed and was once kept by early settlers and miners to rid their cabins of vermin.

Size: 60in x 32in

This painting of a herd of Woolly Mammoths, crossing an alpine meadow, together with Ice Age horses. I was working on the canvas before my accident, and it only required a small amount of additional work to finish it. My grandson, Rowan, let me borrow his toy mammoths to help with the composition for this painting.
