Leopard Gecko
Date: 1994
Size: 12in x 16in
Material: Oil on paper
The naturally marked, wild caught individuals portrayed in this painting are something of a rarity these days for hobbyists. Leopard geckos are no longer imported for the pet trade from their range in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Their bright colours and docile nature have helped them become one of the most popular lizard pets and they are now available in a variety of "designer" colour morphs.

Gila Monster
Date: 1997
Size: 18in x 24in
Material: Oil on canvas
This is probably the first Gila Monster that I painted. From this image I made a T-shirt design, using two of the full Gila images to form a circle, with a small, fat cactus in the center. This design is long out of print but was one of the three favorite T-shirt images of a friend of mine. This is also the design I used for the mosaic that is on the walk outside the Chiricahua Desert Museum in Rodeo, New Mexico.

Tuatara
Date: 2000
Size: 10in x 15in
Material: Oil on paper
The Tuatara, although very lizard-like, is actually a surviving member of the ancient order Rhynchocephalia. I based my painting on specimens that I saw and photographed on my first trip to New Zealand, where they are endemic.

Leopard Gecko Colour Variations
Date: 2001
Size: 23.5in x 19.5in
Material: Oil on canvas
I was asked to spend a week as "Artist in Residence" at the Nature in Art Museum in the UK. Colourful Leopard Geckos were the obvious choice as subjects to paint. With their attractive colours and quiet disposition. they were the perfect first reptile encounter for many of the visiting public and parties of school children.

Lace Monitor
Date: 2002
Size: 20in x 30in
Material: Oil on canvas
Lace Monitor (Varanus varius). Specimens of the “Bell” form of the Australian Lace Monitor are individually marked. This specimen was owned by the late Steve Irwin (the Croc Hunter) who named him “Smiley” after the smiley face-like markings on the back of the lizard’s head and neck. I’ll always be grateful for the generosity shown by Steve and the staff at Australia Zoo for allowing me access to their fantastic collection of animals.

Mexican Beaded Lizard (Heloderma exasperatum)
Date: 2006.
Size: 18in x 24in
Material: Oil on canvas
This painting, commissioned by Steve Angeli, depicts a beaded lizard sitting on an ancient tree stump. I came across the stump while hiking in the deserts of Arizona. As soon as I saw it, I knew that it would make the perfect background for a painting of a gila monster or beaded lizard in search of a bird nest full of eggs or chicks.

Canary Lizards
Date: 2006
Size: 24in x 33in
Material: Oil on canvas
Each of the main islands in the Canaries has a “giant” species of Gallot’s Lizard (Gallotia galloti). The largest is found on Gran Canaria. I positioned the various species within the painting according to the position of the islands on which they are found.

Komodo Dragon
Date: 2006
Size: 20in x 16in
Material: Oil on canvas
“Slash” was the first Komodo Dragon to be bred in Europe, as part of Jim Pether’s breeding project, in the Canary Islands. He looked so good, I just had to paint him. Once hatched, juvenile Komodo Dragons live a mostly arboreal life until large enough to avoid predation by the adults. The small Draco lizard, also depicted, would be a welcome prey item for a young Dragon, during this period.

Knob Tailed Geckos
Date: 2007
Size: 20in x 16in
Material: Oil on canvas
I had to give this marvelous little gecko a reason for pumping himself up on tip toes, in an attempt to look bigger than he was, so I included a Bredl's Python on the hunt for prey. They are both found among the red rock outcrops of Central Australia.

Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis)
Date: 2008
I love the way chameleons look so vulnerable and out of their comfort zone when they need to leave the camouflaged safety of their arboreal habitat. The “Crown of Thorns” plant in the background is also a native of Madagascar.

Galapagos Land Iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus)
Date: 2013
Size: 39.5in x 63.5in
Material: Oil on canvas
This was the first painting that I completed after my visit to the wonderful Galapagos Islands. It was an awesome experience and I could easily spend the rest of my life painting the amazing wildlife in these islands. The painting depicts land iguanas on their South Plaza Island home. Also depicted is a specimen of the Galapagos Lava Lizard (Microlophus albemariensis) among the giant prickly pear cacti and the colorful carpetweed.

Sand Lizards
Date: 2014
Size: 16in x 20in
Material: Oil on canvas
I’m proud to have played an active part in the study of this beautiful lizard, the Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis), and the conservation effort many years ago that led to its legal protection. It seemed right to depict the species among the equally beautiful heathland plants with which they are closely associated. These plants are found over most of the sand lizards’ British range.

Size: 20in x 30in
Material: Oil on canvas
Of the four subspecies of this short-tailed, slow-moving, blue-tongued Australian skink, Tiliqua rugosa aspera is the only one native to eastern Australia. I caught my first specimen of this beautiful lizard over forty years ago, and it has remained one of my favourite lizards ever since. The red flowering shrub depicted in the painting is the Callistemon or Bottlebrush.

Shingleback Skinks
Date: 2015
Size: 20in x 30in
Material: Oil on canvas
Of the four subspecies of this short-tailed, slow-moving, blue-tongued Australian skink, Tiliqua rugosa aspera is the only one native to eastern Australia. I caught my first specimen of this beautiful lizard over forty years ago, and it has remained one of my favourite lizards ever since. The red flowering shrub depicted in the painting is the Callistemon or Bottlebrush.

Granite Night Lizards
Date: 2019
I completed this painting of Granite Night Lizards (Xantusia henshawi) during my period of rehabilitation after breaking my neck in 2018. It has been used as the cover illuastration for the 2019 book, Night Lizards: Field Memoirs and a Summary of the Xantusiidae by Robert L. Bezy.
